A graphic novel effect to be precise. If you followed the Comic Book Panel in 5 Minutes tutorial, than this is along similar (although a little grungier) lines. Part one of this tutorial uses only the helicopter photograph, part two adds in the aerial city shot.

Having seen this effect whilst browsing random websites, I thought i'd see if I could recreate the look. Photoshop makes this very easy to achieve. The original photograph was taken by Andrew Semansco and can be found on Flickr. Here is how to create the comic book version in 5 minutes.

The Basics of Curves

Put simply, the curves tool allows you to change the brightness of pixels in your image. When first using the tool you will notice that the curve is not a curve at all (not yet), but a diagonal line running from bottom-left to top-right. This line represents all of the tones in your image - the lightest point at the top-right and darkest at the bottom-left. By adding anchor-points and changing the shape of the curve we can, for example, increase the overall contrast of the image, or adjust colour balance (more on this later).
